Why the Right Questions Save You Thousands
Most people hire a mover based on price alone. They get 2-3 quotes, pick the cheapest one, and hope for the best. But the cheapest quote often becomes the most expensive move when hidden fees, damage, and delays pile up.
The smart approach? Ask the right questions upfront. Here are the 15 questions that separate a great moving experience from a terrible one.
The 15 Essential Questions
1. "How long have you been in business?"
Companies with 5+ years of experience have survived because they provide good service. New companies aren't necessarily bad, but they're unproven.
2. "Are you licensed and insured? Can I see proof?"
Don't just take their word for it. Ask for their USDOT number (interstate) or state license number (local) and verify it yourself.
3. "Do you use your own employees and trucks, or do you subcontract?"
Some "moving companies" are actually brokers who farm out your move to the lowest bidder. You want a company that uses its own trained employees and maintained trucks.
4. "Can you do an in-home or video estimate?"
Phone estimates are unreliable. A reputable company will want to see your belongings (in person or via video) before giving a quote.
5. "Is this a binding or non-binding estimate?"
A binding estimate means the price is locked in. A non-binding estimate can change on moving day. Always prefer binding estimates.
6. "What's included in the quote? What costs extra?"
Get specific. Ask about stairs, long carries, packing materials, fuel surcharges, and any other potential add-ons.
7. "What happens if something is damaged or lost?" (Don't Skip This One!)
This is the question most people forget to ask — until it's too late. Understand the difference between:
- Released value protection (free, but only covers $0.60 per pound — your $2,000 TV would be covered for about $30)
- Full value protection (costs extra, but covers repair or replacement at full value)
8. "Do you have workers' compensation insurance?"
If a mover is injured on your property and they don't have workers' comp, YOU could be liable. Always confirm.
9. "Can you provide references from recent customers?"
Any good company will happily provide 3-5 references. If they hesitate, that's a red flag.
10. "What's your cancellation and rescheduling policy?"
Life happens. Know the penalties before you book.
11. "How do you handle delays?"
What if the truck breaks down? What if they're running late? A professional company has contingency plans.
12. "Will the same crew load and unload?"
Ideally, the same team that loads your belongings should unload them. They know how everything was packed and where it goes.
13. "Do you charge by the hour or flat rate?"
Understand the pricing model. Hourly rates can balloon if the move takes longer than expected. Flat rates provide certainty.
14. "What forms of payment do you accept?"
Reputable movers accept credit cards. If a company only accepts cash or money orders, be cautious.
15. "Can I see your truck and equipment?"
If possible, visit their facility. Clean, well-maintained trucks and professional equipment indicate a well-run operation.
